Partial Highlights Aftercare: Prevent Brass and Keep Dimension

If you just left my chair with fresh partial highlights, here’s the big rule: for the first 48 to 72 hours, don’t wash, don’t drench your scalp in sweat, and don’t cook your color with hot tools or direct sun. I’ve had clients tell me I made them feel comfortable right away, and I want your hair to feel that same kind of taken-care-of once you’re back out in Fort Lauderdale sun and humidity.
Your first 24 to 48 hours: lock in the toner, don’t rush the rinse
Partial highlights usually include lightener and, in a lot of cases, a toner or gloss to get that clean, dimensional finish. Right after your appointment, I generally recommend giving your hair a little quiet time so the cuticle settles and that tone stays where I placed it.
Quick 48 to 72-hour rules: Skip shampoo, avoid heavy sweating, keep water temperature cool to lukewarm, and hold off on flat ironing or curling if you can.
If you need to refresh your hair without washing, a light dry shampoo at the roots is usually fine. Keep it off the highlighted lengths and avoid anything sticky or heavy. And if you’re in the Cordova Road corridor and heading straight to a workout, I’d honestly rather you wait a day. Sweat and heat can push warmth to show up faster, especially around the hairline and part where partial highlights live.
Also, skip hair oils right away if you tend to run warm or brassy. Oils don’t cause brassiness on their own, but they can grab onto heat and environmental buildup. Give it a couple days, then bring them back in on your ends if your hair wants it.
Days 3 to 7 in Fort Lauderdale: sun, humidity, and “pool hair” are the real test
This is the week where your partial highlights either stay bright and dimensional, or they start drifting warm and dull. Fort Lauderdale is gorgeous, but the sun is strong, humidity is real, and beach or pool time sneaks up fast. Most brassiness isn’t a mistake in the color. It’s what happens after, especially with UV, heat styling, and mineral or chlorine exposure.
My low-effort “beach neighborhood” routine
- If you’re going in the sun, use a UV-protecting leave-in or hair sunscreen spray before you head out.
- If you’re swimming, rinse your hair as soon as you can after. Don’t let pool or ocean water dry down on your highlights.
- If you’re styling, use heat protectant and keep your tools on the lower end. High heat makes blonding work look warmer faster.
Clients around Cordova Road and the nearby beach areas often tell me they want something that looks sun-kissed but still clean and expensive looking, not yellow. That’s exactly why partial highlights are placed where they’ll pop most. But it also means your hairline and top layers need the most protection.
If you feel like your tone shifted after a few days, don’t panic and don’t immediately hit it with purple shampoo every wash. Over-toning can make hair look dull, gray, or flat, and that kills the dimension you came in for.
Sulfate-free shampoo + purple or blue toning: keep the brightness without drying out
I keep aftercare simple because it has to fit real life. For highlights, the two big product categories that matter are a sulfate-free, color-safe shampoo and a toning shampoo used sparingly. If you’re blonde, a purple shampoo can help neutralize yellow. If you pull more orange, a blue toning shampoo can help neutralize that warmth.
How often should you tone?
Most people do best with purple or blue shampoo 1 to 2 times a week, only as needed. Leave it on briefly, rinse well, then follow with conditioner.
Water temperature matters
Cool to lukewarm water helps keep your cuticle calmer. Hot water tends to fade toner faster and can leave highlights looking less crisp.
And if you’ve been in the pool a lot, you might need a clarifying or chelating wash once in a while. I keep that as a “when necessary” tool, not a weekly habit. Always follow it with a hydrating mask so your highlights stay shiny instead of rough.
Keeping partial highlights dimensional between visits: the 6 to 10-week plan
Partial highlights are meant to look natural and lived-in, but you still want that contrast to stay pretty. Dimension usually fades for two reasons: tone shifts warmer and the ends get dry or dull.
My rule of thumb: Plan on a gloss or toner refresh about every 6 to 10 weeks as needed. It’s a small appointment that keeps your highlights looking intentional.
If you love a brighter hairline, I can keep that “frame” popping without pushing you into full highlights. Strategic face-framing placement, plus a root-blend when you need it, tends to give the most bang for your time. It’s also why so many people come back for highlight refreshes instead of starting over.

If something feels “off, ” tell me early so I can fix it fast
A little dryness the first week is common after any lightening service. So is a bit of extra texture until you get a couple deep-conditioning sessions in at home. What I don’t want is you quietly living with brass, banding, or a tone you don’t love.

If you’re seeing warmth you weren’t expecting, tell me what products you used, how often you’ve been in the sun or pool, and what you’re noticing in different lighting. I’ll talk you through the simplest next step. Sometimes it’s as easy as swapping how you’re using toning shampoo. Sometimes a quick gloss refresh is the move.
